Pulmonary Critical Care and Sleep Medicine

Department of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, Safdarjung Hospital made a humble beginning in late 1980s with PFT and Bronchoscopy facility in a small room in ward 13, progressing to establishment of a 4 bedded Critical Care & 10 bedded ward in 1991. The Department currently has grown to a ten (10) bedded respiratory ICU, Forty-two (42) bedded Ward including HDU & four (4) bedded sleep Lab. With advanced bronchoscopy suit (1920 annually) and facility for USG guided procedures (2654 annually), specialist referrals from all departments for clinical opinions, ABG samples (1,56,364 annually), PFT (14,582 annually) daily polysomnography in sleep lab (926 annually) along with daily OPD services (45,582 annually)

The services provided by the department includes:

  • Daily OPD (04 rooms - 150 patients)
  • Management of ICU (10 beds)
  • H1N1 HDU (06 beds)
  • COVID Ward
  • Wards/ HDU patients (42 beds)
  • Interventional lab with daily procedures like FOB, TBNA, EBUS, VAT, Pleurodesis etc.
  • Spirometry with advance equipments (DLCO, IO, Body box)
  • ABG & Sleep Lab on daily basis
  • MBBS/MD/DM training course

The Department of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine is situated in 6th floor, Super Speciality Block. It consists of ICU, Sleep Lab, PFT lab, ABG lab, OPD, Ward-32, bronchoscopy procedure room, day care

Academic and research services

  • Besides these the department is recognized for PG teaching for more than 25 years starting with DNB in Respiratory Medicine (1998), fellowship (FNB) and followed by DM in Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine since 2010. We have trained 39 DMs till date.
  • The department also organizes many national and state level conferences/ workshops / PG updates. The First National pulmonary conference (NAPCON) was organized by the Department in the year 1999.
  • The department since inception has been involved in UG teaching, VMMC, UCMS, Nursing college (RAK College of Nursing and Safdarjung Hospital Nursing college). MPT (institute of spinal injury centre)
  • Research cell created in the department has many ongoing projects like multicentric clinical trial, drug / therapeutic trials and collaborated with ICMR/ Amity university/ Hamdard University etc. on various trials.

  • Since September 2012 the first batch of students (TWO) in DM (Pulmonary & Critical Care) under the Guru Govind Singh Indraspratha University joined the Department, the course is for three years. As of June 2013, the number of DM students admitted for DM & Pulmonary Critical Care has been enhanced to 4 per year. Therefore as on date there are twelve (12) DM Residents.
  • Like all other units the department trains interns/ externs. Post graduate students from other institutions have been coming on a regular basis for training in respiratory medicine & critical care.
  • Learning is a continuous process in the department with weekly seminars to keep the faculty and staff abreast with the latest developments.
  • The department is recognized as a center for examinations of DNB in respiratory medicine.

    • Actively involved in Government healthcare programs to control and CME programs for Dengue, Swine flu and other related diseases
    • Conducted course cum workshop on ICU management of H1N1 influenza patients under MOHFW (Since year 2015 to 2018).

    • Actively involved in providing training of Medical Officers posted en route Amarnath Yatra at J&K since 2014
    • Made the curriculum & training content for conducting training workshop to sensitize APHOs, PHOs, RRTs and Nodal officers designated by the State on Severe Respiratory Disease associated with MERS (CoV).
