Lab Medicine

In late 80’s the Clinical Pathology Deptt. was upgraded to Deptt. of Laboratory Medicine. At present the department has three sections situated at OPD Phase III (Ground Floor), OPD Phase III Left wing (First Floor), New Emergency Block (First Floor) and Old casualty building (Second floor).

Histopathology and Cytopathology

INTRODUCTION:

Pathology is concerned with the study of the derangements of tissue structure and function that occur in disease and the correlation of these changes with clinical signs and symptoms. This clinicopathological approach along with interpretation of tissue biopsies allows the histopathologist to identify the specific lesion.

9.00 A.M – 1.00 P.M (Saturday)

HISTOPATHOLOGY:

All surgical specimens / tissue biopsies, review slides and blocks from the various departments of Safdarjang Hospital are received, processed and examined microscopically to reach a definite diagnosis.

02.00 P.M. – 3.00 P.M.

10.00 A.M. – 11.30 A.M. (Saturday)

Time of receiving slides for review: 10.00 A.M. – 12.30 P.M. in Room No. 413.

No samples are received directly from patients or relatives of patients.

All samples are received from the concerned department along with the requisition form duly completed and signed by the doctor.

Review slides from the department of Radiotherapy or any other department are received along with requisition forms duly completed and signed by the doctor.

Tests done in Histopathology:

Routine H& E staining, Frozen section and scrape Cytology, Special Stains, Immunohistochemistry and Immunofluorescence.

CYTOPATHOLOGY:

Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC): Room No. 557, 5th Floor, OPD Building

Pap’s Smears & fluid Cytology: Room No.410, in Fourth Floor, Deptt. of Pathology, Vardhman Mahavir Medical College, New Delhi-110029.

Receiving time: 10.00 A.M. – 12.00 Noon daily.

 REPORTS: 

 All FNAC reports can be collected from Room No. 557 between 9.30 A.M. – 12.00 Noon on all working days.

Pap smear reports are dispatched to Gynae. OPD Room No. 172.

Fluid cytology reports are collected from Room No. 410.

Tests done in Cytopathology:

FNAC, Special Stains, Immunocytochemistry, PAP and Liquid based cytology

Services offered by Department

a) Central Collection Centre:

Central Collection Centre is situated at OPD Phase –III (Ground Floor), Room No. 19 where the samples from OPD and wards are collected for Departments of Clinical Pathology /Laboratory Medicine, Biochemistry and Microbiology.

All routine haematology/ urine/ stool samples for pathological tests are processed in this lab. Reports are dispatched to the various OPD next morning and wards the same evening.

Gynae Lab is situated at First floor, Gynae OPD where the samples from ANC OPD are collected for Department of Obs & Gynae.

c) Burns and Plastic Lab:

Burns & Plastic Lab is situated at Ground floor, Burns & Plastic OPD where the samples from OPD and wards are collected for Department of Burns & Plastic.

It caters to all indoor and outdoor cases of Burn and Plastic Department

Emergency lab is located at First floor, New Emergency building (NEB). Samples from casualty (24 hrs) and all indoor patients after 4 pm.

Operational 24 hours all days, including Sundays and holidays, providing emergency services.

e) Super speciality block lab (SSB) –

Super speciality block lab is located at Third floor, Super speciality block building (SSB).

All the patients registered undergo FNAC procedure on the same day.

BLOOD BANK & TRANSFUSION MEDICINE

Location – IInd floor CSSR building

NEB, IIIrd floor NEB building – It is a storage facility only. Presently donations are 

performed in the main blood bank.

GENERAL INFORMATION:-The Blood Bank is functional round the clock .

The following activities are routinely performed:

  • Screening of the donors.
  • Blood Donation.
  • Mandatary testing of blood to rule out Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV, Syphilis and Malaria.
  • Preparation of component - Packed cell, FFP , PRP.
  • Compatible Blood issued to wards on the request of the treating doctor, after proper cross matching.
  • Blood issued to outside Hospital as per discussion with respective blood bank incharges.
  • Other tests like ANC blood grouping, BBG DCT and ICT.
  • Platelet Apheresis.
  • Quality control for reagents, tests and components .
