Forensic Medicine and Toxicology
The Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology was established in the year 1987, to cater to the medico-legal work of South-West district of Delhi. In those days, about 900 post-mortem examinations were conducted annually.
In the initial stages, the department was run by the CMOs and in phases Specialists joined the department. Currently, the department is run by Senior Specialists/ Consultants, a Director Professor, Professors and Associate Professors.
In the year 2001, the department established its teaching wing in Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and now regularly run an undergraduate teaching programme for about 150 medical students.
In the year 2002-2003, the autopsy centre was modernized and facilities like ventilated down draft autopsy tables, cantilevered body storage system with extra capacity, electric oscillating saw with vacuum dust extractor and autopsy light system were added.
The department of Forensic Medicine is engaged in teaching, research, training, medico-legal post-mortems, Clinical Forensic Medicine Services & court related work. Department is getting referred cases from court.
In the Year 2023, the number of post-mortem examinations conducted were approximately 3204.

Medico-legal post-mortem-
The department is responsible for conducting post-mortem examinations of all medico-legal cases who expire within the police jurisdiction of South-West district of Delhi. In addition to this post- mortem are also conducted on all the admitted Medico-legal cases from other districts of Delhi and Medico-legal cases coming from outside Delhi.
Mortuary-
- Round the clock post-mortem services.
- As per the MOH&FW, GOI Order dated 15.11.2021, reg. conduct of post mortem in hospitals after sunset, the post mortems are being conducted round the clock. Earlier the post mortems were conducted from 9am to 4pm only on week days and from 9am to 1pm on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays.
- Cold storage: capacity to store 50 bodies with separate unit for Covid positive dead bodies.
Information regarding disposal of Covid positive dead bodies-
- The Covid positive dead bodies are managed as per the guidelines prescribed by the GOI & DDMA.
- The Covid positive dead bodies are not handed over to the relatives directly
- The Covid positive dead bodies are transferred to the cremation/burial grounds through ambulance provided by the hospital FREE OF CHARGE.
Collection of Post-mortem Reports by Investigating Officers-
Location: Room No: 228, Medico-legal Records Room, Department of Forensic Medicine, Second Floor, College Building.
Timing: 10am-4 pm
Post-mortem reports are dispatched after 48 hours of conduction of post-mortem examination.
Museum Specimens-
Displaying the activity done in the Forensic department in the form of- Models depicting unnatural deaths, rape cases, gunshot injuries, effect of burn injuries, different types of poisons acting on the body according to the systems acting on it. Irritants, corrosives and systemic poisons (CNS (stimulant/ depressant) spinal poisons, cardiac poisons, asphyxiants and peripheral poisons), also models, photographs and charts of all the phenomenal relating to death and after death (post mortem changes) and mounted wets specimens (brain, liver, spleen, kidney, stomach, uterus, lungs also justational age of foetus of different months). Medico-legally significant for the post mortem evaluation and formulating the cause of death in the form of wet specimens.
Student Laboratory-
60 students can get practical training in this laboratory, per sitting.
Clinical Forensic Medicine Unit-
Started Clinical Forensic Medicine Unit (CFMU) in June 2022 in the Emergency Medicine department, Safdarjung Hospital
- Deals with age estimation cases, sexual assault forensic examination of accused and consultation in medico-legal cases in SJH only as per order of Court and on request of law enforcement agencies.
- Poison Management Unit: to assist in diagnosis and management of poisoning cases coming to Safdarjung Hospital.
Court Attendance-
Appearance in the court of law as an expert witness in cases of medico-legal nature for the summons received from the courts in Delhi and other states.
Training-
The department provides guest faculty for various training programs organized by CBI Academy, Ghaziabad, LNJN National Institute of Criminology and Forensic Sciences, NIPCCD, Delhi, Delhi Judicial Academy, and BSF camp Chavala.
