The Sports Injury Centre at Safdarjung Hospital was indeed established in 2008 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to cater to the growing need for specialized care in sports injuries and joint disorders. This modern facility was set up just before the Commonwealth Games, and it was inaugurated by none other than former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
On January 8th, 2024 the Sport Injury Centre (SIC) at Safdarjung Hospital was relocated to a new facility equipped with upgraded, imported and state-of-the-art facilities with expanded capacity. It is equipped with cutting-edge technology, including imported exercise machines, techno gyms, underwater treadmills, hydrotherapy pools, and advanced balance systems. Also, with vacuum sports machine, personalized biofeedback strengthening systems, and upcoming biomechanic and motion action labs.

The Centre aims to provide an exceptional working environment for its staff focusing on continuous education and quality improvement so as to provide excellent patient care at international standards. The Centre deals with Sports Injuries (Arthroscopy) & late sequel of sports injury (Arthritis & Joint Replacement). Our expert team provides:
- Diagnosis and treatment of injuries affecting hip, knee, ankle, shoulder, elbow, and wrist, including surgeries for ligament reconstruction and cartilage repair.
- Team care for national and international sporting events, encompassing sports injury management and education for injury prevention.
- Baseline examinations for athletes.
- Arthroscopic and open ligament reconstruction surgeries for knee, ankle, and other joints, including:
- ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL, PLC, POL, multi-ligamentous injuries
- ATFL, CFL, and other joint-related injuries
- ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL, PLC, POL, multi-ligamentous injuries
- Recurrent patellar dislocations
- Cartilage defect management
- Shoulder dislocation surgeries
- Rotator cuff tear repairs
- AC joint surgeries
- Joint replacement surgeries for knee and hip joints
User Charges:
The Registration, Consultation, Admission, Rooms, physiotherapy and Surgery services offered are free of cost. The implants used in the surgery, if any, along with some disposable items, are required to be purchased by the patient.
The diagnostic & Pathological tests performed in the respective labs working on PPP model are charged as per the CGHS rates.
As per Government policy, the Ayushman (PMJAY) beneficiaries are provided all in-patient treatment free of cost.

The faculty members of the Centre have an impressive track record of scholarly achievements, demonstrating their commitment to advancing knowledge in sports medicine and orthopaedic care. Our faculty members have authored numerous publications in International Indexed Journals (SCI/PubMed), and National Indexed Journals. They have also presented papers and shared expertise at National Conferences and International Conferences.
Our faculty members are renowned nationally for their specialized skills in Arthroscopic Surgeries and Joint Replacement Surgeries. They are frequently invited as guest faculty to deliver demonstration surgeries and lectures at National Conferences, International Conferences and Reputed Institutes.
The faculty members contribute to the academic community through Teaching and mentoring, Curriculum development, and Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs.

Teaching Activities:
- Regular seminars, case presentations and journal clubs are conducted in the department.
- The department frequently invites guest faculty for lectures and the department faculty also visits other institutes for guest lectures.
- Regular workshops and conferences are held at the Centre where young orthopaedic surgeons from all over the country and abroad are imparted training in basic and advanced Arthroscopic procedures.
