Introduction:

B.Sc. MLT course was started in VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital from the academic session 2019-20. Prior to this DMLT course was being run which was upgraded to BSc MLT in 2019-20. B.Sc. MLT programme is of 3-years duration. The course is affiliated to Guru Gobind Singh I.P. University. At present the total strength of students is 56. The current intake for the year 2020-21 is 28 students.

B.Sc. in Medical Laboratory Technology is a paramedical program that offers practical and theoretical knowledge about the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of various kinds of diseases and health problems with the help of clinical laboratory tests. Medical Laboratory professionals play an important role in the diagnosis of the diseases and providing the best care and treatment available for it.

During the program, students learn to detect and diagnose diseases. They also acquire knowledge about the collection and sampling of important data, testing, documentation, and reporting for the same.

To excel in the program students should have sound knowledge, good skills and an ability to finish the task accurately. They should also have a background and aptitude towards science, laboratory equipment, and instruments and the ability to use a computer.

Criteria of Admission:

12th Class of 10+2 pattern with PCM or PCB with minimum of 50% marks in PCM or PCB

or

10+2 vocational stream (ML T) with minimum of 50% marks.

Admission Procedure:

Through entrance test, to be conducted by the University as per the syllabus of CBSE of Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics or Physics, Chemistry & Biology of 11th & I2th class standards. Students should be given option either to attend the Mathematics or Biology portion in the entrance test.

Examination Scheme:

There shall be annual examinations at the end of each academic year to be conducted by the University in the months of May-June followed by supplementary examinations in the month of September- October.

Vocational Hospital & Diagnostic Laboratory Training:

The students are required to undergo laboratory practice/training at the laboratories conducting all pathological, bacteriological & biochemical tests. During this period students are posted in the different departments for full training. The student shall be entrusted with Laboratory responsibilities under direct supervision of Pathologist/Medical Officer in charge of the laboratory.

The student shall maintain the record of work that is to be verified and certified by the Pathologist/Medical Officer under whom he/she works. Assessment and evaluation of training shall be by scrutiny of the record of work, tests of knowledge, skills and attitude during training.

Assessment shall be determined on the basis of the following:

  • Proficiency of knowledge required for each diagnostic technique.
  • The competency in skills expected to manage each diagnostic technique, competency for performance of self-performance.
  • Of having been assistant in procedures.
  • Of having observed.
  • Responsibilities, punctuality in the department working, involvement in procedures, follow up of reports.
  • Capacity to work in a team (behavior with colleagues, nursing staff and relationship with Medical and Para-medicals).
