The Department of Nephrology & Renal Transplant Medicine at VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital is a premier tertiary care centre dedicated to the comprehensive management of kidney diseases. The department provides advanced clinical care, renal replacement therapies, kidney transplantation services, interventional nephrology procedures, and academic training in nephrology.

With a multidisciplinary team of experienced nephrologists, trained nursing staff, dialysis technicians, and resident doctors, the department strives to deliver high-quality, evidence-based, and patient-centred kidney care.

The department functions through two clinical units that provide coordinated inpatient, outpatient, dialysis, and transplant services.

Clinical Services

 

1. Comprehensive Nephrology Care

The department provides evaluation and management of:

  • Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

  • Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)

  • Glomerular Diseases

  • Diabetic Kidney Disease

  • Hypertension and Resistant Hypertension

  • Electrolyte and Acid–Base Disorders

  • Hereditary and Genetic Kidney Diseases

  • Kidney Stone Disease

  • Pregnancy-related Kidney Disorders

 

2. Kidney Transplant Program

The department runs an active living donor kidney transplant program with comprehensive pre-transplant and post-transplant care.

Services include:

  • Donor and recipient evaluation

  • Immunological assessment and compatibility testing

  • Pre-transplant counselling

  • Immunosuppressive therapy induction and maintenance

  • Peri-operative nephrology care

  • Post-transplant monitoring

  • Management of transplant complications

  • Long-term transplant follow-up

Both clinical units conduct kidney transplantation on an alternate basis while adhering to a common departmental transplant protocol.

 

3. Dialysis Services

The department provides advanced renal replacement therapies, including:

  • Hemodialysis to admitted patients

  • Emergency Hemodialysis

  • Hemodiafiltration (HDF)

  • Sustained Low Efficiency Dialysis (SLED)

Key features:

  • Dialysis services available round-the-clock for admitted patients

  • Priority dialysis support for critically ill patients

  • Dialysis support for transplant candidates undergoing evaluation

  • Dedicated dialysis services for HBV-positive and HCV-positive patients

 

4. Interventional Nephrology

The department performs a wide range of nephrology procedures, including:

  • Temporary (Non-tunnelled) Dialysis Catheter Insertion

  • Tunnelled Dialysis Catheter Placement

  • Native Kidney Biopsy

  • Transplant Kidney Biopsy

  • Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter Insertion

  • Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) Access Procedures

 

5. Therapeutic Apheresis

Plasmapheresis services are available for patients admitted under Nephrology and other departments of Safdarjung Hospital whenever clinically indicated.

 

6. Inpatient Services

The department provides specialized inpatient nephrology care for patients requiring:

  • Diagnostic evaluation of kidney diseases

  • Immunosuppressive therapies

  • Management of glomerular diseases
