Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR)
Introduction
Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital is one of the oldest Rehabilitation Centres in the country where comprehensive rehabilitation services are available.
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), also known as Physiatry or Rehabilitation Medicine, aims to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to those who have any medical condition which restricts participation in activities and not in a state of good health as defined by WHO. These impairments or disabilities could be due to affliction of brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons. A PMR Specialist (Physiatrist) treats patient as a whole with the goal to help them understand their condition and provide the tools and resources to manage a successful healing process with the ultimate aim of improving the functioning of the patient. The continuity of care offers a variety of treatment methods to reduce or eliminate challenges and address recurrence. PMR specialists are post graduate trained doctors (Post MBBS- MD/DNB/Dip. PMR) who provide the necessary expertise related to acute and chronic pain management, deformities & amputation, work-related injuries, orthopaedic injuries, sports medicine, paediatric neuromusculoskeletal problems, and dynamic team-oriented approach.
Our vision is to keep PMR department at VMMC and SJH, a premier teaching and training centre in the country providing contemporary patient care services and competency-based trainings for all personal involved in medical rehabilitation. Towards this vision we have set our mission to strengthen existing services, introduce new services, improve teaching and training and encourage research.
