Medicine

The Department of Medicine is one of the largest Departments of Safdarjang Hospital & VMMC. The Department provides comprehensive health care to patients in Indoor and outdoor Departments. Round the clock emergency services are provided in Emergency Ward-A. Besides posting two physicians from the department of Medicine to VVIP duty every month, the department has to provide doctors for various disasters and Health Mela’s & Amarnath Yatra etc. on regular basis. The Department is attached to V.M. Medical College and teaching MBBS and MD students. Department of Medicine is also running the special clinics for Geriatric patients, Rheumatology Clinic, Gastroenterology Clinic(G.E Clinic) & ART Centre. The Medicine Department is running two parallel medical OPDs for General patients and CGHS beneficiaries. The daily attendance in around (1000+600 patients). The medicine department is admitting nearly 90-110 patients each day, who are managed by one unit by rotation. During the time of outbreaks (i.e. Dengue, H1N1, Gastrocolitis etc.) the staff of medicine departments manages patients in specially created wards.

Outdoor department : For non-CGHS patients OPD services are provided at 1st floor B & C wings of new OPD block. The average daily attendance varies from 800-1200/day.

For CGHS patients : OPD in the CGHS Wing, D Block of new OPD building on 3rd floor. Specialists also visit various CGHS dispensaries

    Head of the unit: day to day administration of wards & units. Chairman/member of various committees of the hospital.

    • Nodal officer duty at casualty by rotation (Rotational duties)
    • Supervision of work of Junior & senior residents & medical officer.
    • Liaison with other support services deptt. for regular supply/repair/drugs, equipments and maintenance of work in ward through CPWD.

  • Health care to VVIPs -

    Prime Minister - Every moth 5 Physician & 3 anesthetics and 3 surgeons are withdrawn from Safdarjung Hospital by rotation & posted at Prime Minister office & residence. They are posted on rotation morning, evening and night duties with no extra remuneration or honorarium.

    Ex-Prime Minister & Ex Presidents - Two physicians are withdrawn from every month posted at Ex-Prime Minister cell located at Dr. R.M.L Hospital. They are also posted on rotational duties. Except consultants all physician & senior physicians are posted on these two above duties.

    7 specialists are withdrawn and posted to VVIP care every month Daily 4-5 specialists attend various CGHS dispensaries Hence around 12 specialists are not available in the hospital till 1 p.m. for patient care.

  • Disaster Management -

    • Member of various disaster teams.
    • Visit/stay of several day at places of disaster and are requires to leave at few hours notice
    • Fact finding team
    • specialists are sent to various places in the country as part of team to investigate mysterious epidemics
  • Organising Conferences/CME Specialists of every department organize various conference & CME (Continuous Medical Education) programmes at hospital or outside in capacity as member of various professional bodies.
  • Promotion of various National Health Programmes especially of Family Welfare, HIV and control & prevention of non communicable disease studies.- Diabetes, Hypertension, CAD, Cancer, nutritional disorder & water borne diseases.
  • To give time bound reply to Parliament and RTI questions.
  • Medical Examination of all Class I services approved by UPSE.

  • Radioisotope studies were done in the past but have been suspended at present and are likely to start in the near future.
