The Department of Urology was established in the year 1989 with six beds, distributed among various surgical wards. Inpatient services got a boost in December 1992 with the inauguration of a twenty bedded urology ward (ward 31) on the third floor of the blood bank building. The founder Head of Department was Late Dr. (Prof) N. K. Mohanty, who single handedly toiled for many years to establish Urology at Safdarjung Hospital. With the commissioning of the Super Speciality Block (SSB) in the year 2017, the department, which by then had been renamed as the Department of Urology and Renal Transplant shifted all services to the SSB block. Today, the Department of Urology and Renal Transplant stands as one of the top tertiary care urology departments in the country. The current Head of Department is Dr. (Prof) Pawan Vasudeva and there are a total of eight faculties including six professors and two assistant professors.
The department caters to patients from all parts of the country. To give some perspective in 2024, a) we attended to 76265 OPD patients b) had 3716 admissions and c) performed 3067 major surgeries and more than 14204 minor surgical procedures. We run 4 major operation theatres and 2 minor operation theatres six days a week, round the year. All operations, including complex robotic surgeries and even transplant surgeries, which cost lakhs of rupees in the private sector, are provided completely free for all patients with no bias.
The department not only provides the highest standards of clinical care, it is also a premier teaching institute. While teaching started way back in 2008 with the commissioning of the DNB (Urology) course, MCh in Urology was started in the year 2017. Current intake each year is of five MCh students and admission is through the All-India NEET SS exam.
