  • The Paediatric OPD is located on the 2nd floor in the OPD building 
  • The indoor wards are located on the ground (Ward 18), 2nd (Ward 20), and 3rd floor (Ward 21)   of the ‘H Block’ of the hospital
  • Two NICU are located near ward 5 and ward 9 ward. PNC (Paediatrics Neonatal care) ward in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Specialty Clinics

Paediatric Chest Clinic: Every Monday.

Pulmonary diseases like asthma, pulmonary eosinophilia and the like are dealt with in this clinic. Not only is medical management provided, but also education on the use of inhalers is imparted.                                  

High Risk Newborn Clinic: Every Tuesday.

All aspects of high-risk inborn babies are monitored in this clinic starting from assessment of growth and development to screening for complications like retinopathy of prematurity, hearing loss, etc.

Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition

      In this clinic we are serving services related to GI diseases like Pain abdomen, IBD, Celiac disease, Acid peptic diseases, Constipations , Diarrhea, Obesity NAFLD, Chronic liver disease, hepatitis, diagnostic, & therapeutic GI Endoscopy as well as  stricture dilatation. 

Paediatric Hematology- Oncology Clinic: Every Wednesday: Review/follow up of patients receiving chemotherapy and patients of different haematological disorders like Hemoglobinopathies (Thalassemia, sickle cell anaemia etc) ,refractory anaemias, bleeding disorders etc

Paediatric Nephrology Clinic: Every Thursday: Close follow up and management of a variety of renal diseases like nephrotic syndrome, glomerulonephritis, vesicoureteral reflux, Lupus nephritis, tubular disorders, voiding dysfunction, etc is offered in this clinic. 

Paediatric Neurology Clinic: Every MondayThis clinic provides care for a wide range of neuromuscular diseases, degenerative brain diseases, epilepsy syndromes, neuropathies, etc.

Paediatric Endocrinology clinic Every Friday: Follow up of patients with endocrine disorders

Paediatric Cardiology Clinic: Every Friday 

Medical management of congenital heart diseases and acquired heart diseases is offered in this clinic along with close follow up and early referral for surgery as and when needed.

ACT After completion of therapy Clinic: Follow up care for cancer survivors

Immunization Clinic: Every day.

Daily immunization services, administration of vitamin A and weight monitoring services are provided here

Pediatric Rheumatology clinic: Every Friday. Follow up for Rheumatological diseases.

ORT Corner : Every day.

Zinc and ORS are provided here in addition to counselling on the management of diarrhoeal diseases.


Emergency Services

Round the clock (24 x 7) fully functional and well-equipped Paediatric emergency services are provided in. ER 2 NEB Ground Floor (Hall no 2). All patients coming from OPD and directly are admitted through Emergency room. After initial assessment and stabilisation, the critical patients are sent to PICU,MNICU& HDU and relatively hemodynamically stable children are sent to wards for further management.

Bed strength: The department of Paediatrics has 312 distributed among the following areas

  9. Post-Natal Ward: 124 (Administratively these beds belong to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. However, the newborn babies with mothers on these beds are managed clinically and academically by the Department of Paediatrics.


Paediatric Neurology and Child Development Unit, Department of Paediatrics

1.   Paediatric Neurology Services are provided in a streamlined manner by the Department of Paediatrics, Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital since July 2012. 

2. The division is well equipped in terms of trained expertise (Pediatric neurologist and developmental pediatricians), requisite infrastructure and equipment (anthropometric tools, Teller’s visual acuity cards, Screening Automated Auditory Brainstem Reflexes, Impedance audiometry, psychological and neurological assessment tools.) 

3. It provides evidence-based care to children with neurological illnesses spanning neurodevelopmental, neurobehavioral, neurometabolic, neuromuscular and neurodegenerative disorders. There is a dedicated 20-bed pediatric neurology facility for in-patient specialized care for children with neurological disorders requiring hospitalization.

4. Diagnostic procedure like lumbar puncture, muscle biopsy, CSF manometry and neostigmine challenge test are also provided. We also have facilities for providing dietary therapies for refractory epilepsy (ketogenic diet, modified Atkins diet and low glycemic index treatment). 

5. The laboratory services provided are video Electroencephalograph (EEG) for OPD patients. and ambulatory EEG for sick children admitted in PICU or NICU facility; Nerve conduction studies, electromyography, repetitive nerve stimulation test, visual, somatosensory and auditory evoked potentials.

6. OPD services for children with pediatric neurology and developmental problems include screening and assessment in the morning OPD on Wednesdays and Saturday, specialty neurology clinic on Monday 2 pm and daily OPD in Child Development Centre.

7. Child Development Centre was inaugurated as part of neurodevelopmental assessment of high-risk newborns enrolled in immediate Kangaroo Mother care project on 18.1.2020 that has thereafter expanded to provide clinical services even after the end of project from July 2022 onwards. It provides daily OPD services under one roof for children with special needs like developmental delay, autism, intellectual disability, ADHD, learning difficulties and school problems. These children are holistically assessed and managed by a team of paediatrician, psychiatric nurse, child psychologist, audiologist, speech therapist, physiotherapist and occupational therapist.

8. The unit also provides hearing screening facilities to newborns in Neonatal units and   postnatal wards.

9. The unit collaborates with All India institute of speech and hearing, Mysuru for audiology and speech services and NIPCCD, Hauz Khas for disability certification. 

 10. The unit is part of prestigious WHO-ICMR research projects and aspires to generate       quality evidence-based guidelines through meticulous research. The division is regularly engaged in teaching activities and has trained not only MBBS and MD students but also close to 50 psychology interns, 25 audiology and speech therapy interns and nursing students. It also conducts regular national and international workshops and parent awareness campaigns.

11. The vision of the division is to provide quality diagnostic and early intervention medical services, be a training hub for doctors and other allied professionals and be an academic center of excellence creating future healthcare leaders.
