Forensic Medicine and Toxicology
1. INTRODUCTION:
The Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology at VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital is equipped with modern mortuary infrastructure, including cold storage facilities with a capacity to accommodate up to 100 bodies. The department plays a vital role in supporting the medico-legal system through scientific investigation and timely service delivery.
Academic Activities
The Department of Forensic Medicine is actively involved in imparting quality education and training to students enrolled in various academic programmes, including MBBS and M.D. (Forensic Medicine).
The faculty members are actively involved in teaching, academic mentoring, and research activities, including supervision and guidance for the thesis/dissertation work of PG & Ph.D students.
The Department also conducts training programmes for Pre-Trauma Technicians (PTT) and provides short-term training to students from various institutions.
Medico-Legal Post-mortem Services
The Department conducts medico-legal post-mortem examinations and manages medico-legal cases as per the jurisdiction notified by the Government of NCT of Delhi. These include:
Medico-legal cases falling under the jurisdiction of the Police Stations and Districts notified by the Government of NCT of Delhi, as per the latest notification dated 30/06/2025, including South, South-East, South-West, Metro, and Special Units (CAW).
Admitted medico-legal cases referred from other districts of Delhi.
Medico-legal cases brought from outside Delhi.
Round-the-Clock Post-mortem Services
In compliance with the Order dated 15 November 2021 issued by the MoHFW, Government of India, the department has implemented 24×7 post-mortem services.
Previously, post-mortem examinations were conducted between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM on weekdays, and from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. The transition to round-the-clock services has significantly strengthened the efficiency of medico-legal investigations and enhanced service availability.
MedLEaPR Portal
The Department has initiated the uploading of post-mortem reports on the MedLEaPR Portal in compliance with the directions issued by the Government of NCT of Delhi vide Order No. F.11/IT/H&FW/MISC/2022/SSHFW1/565-569 dated 03/06/2025.
The initiative facilitates the systematic digital uploading of medicolegal/ post-mortem reports through the portal.

Location- Mortuary Block:located near Gate No. 4 & Police Post, Safdarjung Hospital.
3. SERVICES-
MORTUARY-
Round the clock post mortem services.
Cold storage facility available (02 cooling chambers): Capacity to accommodate/preserve 84 dead bodies and in case of disaster it can accommodate up to 100 dead bodies.
CLINICAL FORENSIC MEDICINE UNIT (CFMU)
The Clinical Forensic Medicine Unit provides specialised medico-legal consultation and examination services, including:
Age estimation cases as referred by competent authorities
Forensic examination of accused persons in sexual assault cases
Medico-legal consultations for Safdarjung Hospital cases, conducted strictly as per court orders and requests from law enforcement agencies.
Poison Management Unit
The department also operates a Poison Management Unit that assists clinicians in the diagnosis and management of poisoning cases presenting to Safdarjung Hospital.
PATHOLOGICAL FOETAL AUTOPSY:
The Department has started providing facilities for pathological foetal autopsy as part of its academic and medical services. The examination helps in understanding the cause of foetal death and provides valuable information for further medical evaluation. It is an interdisciplinary service involving the Departments of Gynaecology, Paediatrics, and Pathology.

6. Achievements and events:
During 2025, the Department continued to strengthen medico-legal services by sustaining round-the-clock (24×7) post-mortem facilities, improving the efficiency and timeliness of investigations and supporting law enforcement agencies.
The Department continued to strengthen its Clinical Forensic Medicine services and regularly contributed to academic and professional activities.
A Histopathology Laboratory has also been established to support the Department’s academic and research activities.
Uploading of post-mortem reports on the MedLEaPR Portal has been initiated.
Legacy data for the period 01/07/2024 to 04/05/2025, comprising 2,732 post-mortem reports, has been successfully uploaded to the portal as per the mandated guidelines. The portal facilitates Police Investigating Officers (IOs) in obtaining the required post-mortem reports online, thereby reducing the need for physical visits to the department.The Department has started providing facilities for pathological foetal autopsy as part of its academic and medical services. The Department organizes Continuing Medical Education (CME) programmes annually to promote knowledge sharing and keep medical professionals updated with recent developments in the field. In addition, a National E-Poster Competition was organized under the aegis of the Indian Academy of Forensic Medicine, encouraging academic participation and learning.
