Cardiology
The Department of Cardiology at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) and Safdarjung Hospital has been providing comprehensive cardiovascular care for over two decades. Since its relocation to the Super Speciality Block in 2018, the department has expanded into a high-volume tertiary care and academic center, delivering advanced clinical services, state-of-the-art diagnostics, interventional cardiology, and cardiac electrophysiology.
The department is equipped with four state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization laboratories for all types of Cardiac Intervention. One Cath lab works 24 hours for Emergency Primary Angioplasty for Heart attack patients and a dedicated biplane electrophysiology laboratory for complex cardiac rhythm management procedures. Comprehensive adult and paediatric interventional cardiology services are offered, including complex coronary interventions under intravascular imaging guidance using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS), balloon valvuloplasty, and transcatheter device closure of congenital heart defects.
Advanced electrophysiology services include diagnostic electrophysiological studies, three-dimensional electroanatomical mapping using the CARTO system, radiofrequency catheter ablation for complex arrhythmias, permanent pacemaker implantation, cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT), implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implantation, and physiological pacing techniques including His-bundle pacing and Left Bundle Branch Area Pacing (LBBAP).
The department also provides a comprehensive range of non-invasive diagnostic facilities, including treadmill exercise testing, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, Holter monitoring, transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, and advanced electrophysiological evaluation. Functional assessment of coronary artery disease is routinely performed using Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR).
Structural heart interventions form an integral part of the department’s services, with Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) being performed regularly by an experienced multidisciplinary heart team.
As a premier academic institution, the department is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, clinical research, and specialist training. It is recognized for the Doctorate of Medicine (DM) in Cardiology program and admits eight DM Cardiology residents annually, making it one of the largest cardiology training programs in the country. The department is committed to excellence in patient care, education, and research, while continuously adopting emerging technologies and evidence-based practices in cardiovascular medicine.
